Dr. Olivia Rivas
About Dr. Rivas
Dr. Olivia Rivas is a native of San Benito, Texas, and a graduate of the San Benito Schools.
She completed and undergraduate degree in History and Political Science from Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas.
After receiving a federal fellowship, she completed a doctoral degree in Counseling from Texas A&M Commerce.
She has done post-doctoral studies at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Oxford University in England.
She recently retired as a full professor with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
She served for several years as Vice President for Student Affairs while also teaching in graduate studies at UTRGV.
Music has always been an interest of hers since she was a child and researching the rich heritage of the “working-class music” of her Hispanic roots has been a passion that she shares with others through presentation and publication.
Dr. Rivas lives in Harlingen, Texas, with her husband Robert.
