Ramon Ayala
Conjunto Music All-Star
Loyal fans refer to Ramon Ayala as El Rey del Acordeon, (The King of the Accordion”).
With more than forty years on the Conjunto Norteno circuit, his popularity accounts for the Grammy Awards and more than 100 albums.
Songs like:
- “Un Puno de Tierra”
- “La Rama del Mesquite”
- “Tragos Amargos”
Are sing-along classics when he plays dances both north and south of the TExas-Mexico borders.
Born December 8, 1945 in Monterry, Meixo, Ramon Ayala was the son of Ramon Cobarruibas, a local musician who struggle to make ends meet.
Young Ramon began playing accordion at the age of six to earn money that would help his family.
His family migrated further north and eventually settled in Reynosa.
“Voy abuscar, un rinconcito en el cielo.”
While the family was living in Reynosa, Ramon Ayala met Corenlio Reyna, a vocalist and bajo sexto guitarist.
Playing with Corenlio enhanced Ramon’s distinctive emotional attachment to accordion expression.
To Cornelio’s gruff, hard-core deliveries of Norteno soul, Ramon blended harmoney vocals.
Together they became known as “Los Relampagos del Norte,” and by 1963, their hit song, “Ya No Llores,” was a houshold tune playing out of radios throughout Mexico and Mexican-America.
And the Story Continues
Los Relampagos lasted for eight years during which time Ayala and Reyna became music gods worshipped by a new multitude of fans who had previously associated Conjunto Norteno only with rowdy cantina music.
In 1971, Cornelio Reyna left to start a solo career and Ramon Ayala was left to experiment with a new vocalist…
Antonio Suaceduda.
Ayala’s new group became Ramon Ayala y Los Bravos del Norte.
The next big wave began when Eliseo Robles came on board for vocals and bajo sexto guitar.
Popularity soared beyond levels acheieved ruing the relampago years.
Ramon Ayala kept his signarutre acordion riffs and blended his polishes “segundas” oer Elesio Robles rugged vocals to achieve a self-assured sound that crossed all socio-economic lines.
With current vocalist Mario Marichalar, Ramon Ayala continues to ride the waves of sucess as an international recording artist.
His CD sales aversage 750K units per year, and he performs more than 100 dance concerts per year.
Besides accolades too numerous to mention, he has starred in 13 movies.
Firmly rooted in the ranch country culture that carries the heritage of “Musica Ranchera,” Ramon Ayala has already been a tremendous influence on several generations of young accordion players..
For the legacy of his success and dedicaton to the performance of conjunto musics, we proudly welcome “Don Roman Ayala” into the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame.
